Malibou Lake Mountain Club is located about 10 minutes or 4 miles south of Agoura Hills and the Ventura Freeway.
Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains national recreational area, this unique community emphasizes that it’s Malibou, not Malibu. The most common explanation of the Chemash spelling of Malibou is that they inhabited this area for nearly 4000 years and name the stretch of beach where Malibu Creek meet the ocean Humaliwo, which translates roughly to “the surf sounds loudly”. This translated into what we have today as “Malibou” but it also could stem from the political climate around the 1920s when this club started. “El Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit was one of the last Mexican land grants in Southern California to be divided. Rhoda May Rindge, who spent nearly 17 years litigating to keep the highway and the public out of her property, owned the Rancho. It is rumored that her armed patrol, the Malibu Rindge Rider shot to kill, and that they were known to dynamite and plow under country roads in the area. Using an “ou” at the end of our name rather than the “u” might have been one technique to separate our development from what might have been a politically unpleasant situation.” [Source]
Or, as some say, it could simply revolve around the need to be different.
Regardless, the Malibou Lake Mountain Club is certainly a fun venue beginning with the original rustic clubhouse in 1924. It burned down in 1936 but the current clubhouse was built as a more practical building for smaller memberships. The original club was designed to be one of the largest social clubs in Southern California. Even though this never conceptualized, we feel that our country club is one in a million.
Nestled in amongst the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains, Malibou Lake is a diamond in the rough with soaring oak and sycamore trees and beautiful hills between Malibu Beach and Conejo Valley. Because of our location, it makes a perfect place for a country home or private getaway. With the seclusion of a 2400- acre Paramount Ranch and a 245 acre lake, this micro-community features rustic summer cabins, lakefront homes, and year-round living enjoyment.
The club itself features tennis courts, a refreshing swimming pool, freshwater fishing, hiking and biking trails, equestrian facilities, shopping, entertainment venues, fitness centers and health clubs.
Malibou Mountain Club also makes an ideal venue for weddings, banquets and events. The Terrace Room features rich colors, high ceilings and open space for dancing and entertainment.
Malibou Lake has created scenes in dozens of movies over the years starting back to the original movie shot here, Boris Karloff’s “Frankenstein”.
